Car Air Flow Meters

The air flow meter (AFM) is an essential component in regulating the amount of fuel injection in the modern car engine. That is why all modern petrol engines and diesel engines feature an AFM. As you move faster when you press the pedal, this component senses more air, allowing the injectors to pump more fuel. On the other hand, engines with carburettors do not require an AFM because the carburettor itself can regulate the amount of fuel. If you noticed that your engine management indicator shows a fault in the AFM, you will need to find and replace it.

There are several types of AFM used in modern cars. The earlier type used a vane or flap, while the later types were often called airflow sensors. If you want to replace the flow meter, look for the air intake opening on the engine. This is normally made of plastic and shaped like a little trumpet. Usually you can find the AFM either in the filter box or attached to the pipe work. Companies that manufacture these components typically base their products on the model and origin of the car.

How can you determine if your AFM is not working? The easiest indicator for this is the malfunction light in your dashboard. Normally, your vehicle will start, but will run inconsistently. It would also cause your truck to consume more fuel and perform poorly. The task of changing your air flow meter is not that difficult. It does not require you to have special skills or tools. In fact, this can be done by using a bit of common sense and a workshop manual.
