How to Safely Store Your Tools At Home

If you are quite the handyman or handywoman, then you probably have a trove of working tools lying around the house. It is nice to have easy access to all these tools, but if you are living with young children, you should make the effort to store them in places where your kids cannot easily reach.

Children are naturally curious and objects that are foreign to them hold tremendous attracting power. Their interest is especially piqued if the objects happen to be "grown-up" stuff or things that only mommy and daddy can use. Blunt objects such as valves and fittings may not seem to be much of a threat but with children and their unpredictable imaginations, even a seemingly harmless piece of cable can become a source of danger.

If possible, you should keep all your tools away from the house. Having a tool shed makes it less likely for children to become curious about your playthings. More often than not, if something is out of their sight, then it is out of their minds. If you do not have a tool shed, however, keep your working tools in a high place or, better yet, a cabinet with a padlock. Having your tools locked up will give you peace of mind, knowing that your kids will not be able to fiddle around with your power drill if you are not in the house.

Of course, talking with your children is also a great help. Set down clear rules about the use of tools in the home. Explain why tools can be dangerous and give concrete examples of the accidents that might happen if they tinker with your stuff. Emphasise that you think they are responsible enough to follow your rules. By making them feel trusted, children will be encouraged to keep their promises.
