Importance of Industrial Health and Safety Standards

With tougher competitions going on among today's industries, virtually all productions are done non-stop. Aside from that, numerous machines are used to finish different tasks quicker and easier. In this setting, accidents can be inevitable. For this reason, industrial health and safety standards are set by the government to ensure that people and businesses are protected from fatalities, lawsuits, and sky-rocketing rates of healthcare.

In the United Kingdom, the Health and Safety Executive and the local council draws up and enforces standards under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The act reiterates that authorities should make sure that basic legal requirements in regard to such concern are met. In addition, member states of the European Union follow a similar structure that mandates employers to carefully assess various risks in the workplace and place preventive measures based on the hierarchy of control, which starts with the elimination of any element that may be hazardous and ends with the provision of personal protective equipment. Risks, in this context, are defined by any combination of the possibility that a certain outcome or result will occur and the severity of the harm involved in a given situation. Similarly, harm describes the direct or indirect degradation of the physical, mental or social wellbeing of a worker, whether temporary or permanent. For example, repetitive and prolonged exposure to harmful chemicals can lead to respiratory diseases.

And so, the law mandates that employers assess potential hazards in the workplace to prevent accidents. Furthermore, employees should have proper training regarding safety protocols to ensure that everyone watches over their own safety at all times. This holds especially true for high-risk workplaces like those that deal with chemicals, gases, heavy machinery, and the like.
